I’ll be going over later to check in with the doctors in Burin,” said Doctor Gonzales.

“We’re going to head over soon,” said Shelley Parsons. “First, we’re going home to get cleaned up and to help Charlene pack a bag. We’ve got cousins in Salt Pond we can stay with.”

“I can give Levi a ride,” said Windflower, trying to be helpful.

“That would be great,” said Shelley. Charlene was trying, and not quite making it happen, to regain her voice. She squeezed Windflower’s hand and smiled weakly at the doctor. In response, the doctor’s maternal instinct kicked in, and she pulled the older woman into her embrace.

“I know it’s hard, but I’ll be with you,” said the doctor. The two Parsons women were now openly sobbing.

Before he started bawling too, Windflower went to Levi Parsons and tapped his shoulder. The boy looked up at the Mountie in surprise, but after saying goodbye to his mother, followed Windflower out the clinic door. He was even more surprised when Windflower opened the passenger side door of his Jeep and invited him to jump in. With equal parts terror and excitement, Levi Parsons got in as Windflower shut the door behind him.

Windflower tried to make small talk with the teenager but to no avail. He crunched himself as small as he could in the seat and it looked to Windflower like he was trying to either levitate or disappear. Since neither was possible, Windflower asked him if he liked ice cream. The kid shrugged his shoulders. Windflower took that as a yes and decided to drive to the best place around to get an ice cream, the small store in Garnish.

They drove in silence. When they got there, Windflower simply asked the boy if he wanted chocolate or vanilla. Those were the two main soft-serve options. Once again Levi shrugged so Windflower decided to get them both a swirl, a combination of both flavours. He brought them back to the Jeep and passed one to the boy. He took it and Windflower drove off. They started back towards Grand Bank when Windflower pulled over at the lookout in Frenchman’s Cove.

It was called a park, but there wasn’t much there but a small wooden structure and some steps that led down to the beach. Whenever he was over this way, Windflower liked to stop and gaze out over the ocean. Today was one of those days. He got out of the Jeep and walked down toward the water. He peeked behind him, but it looked like Levi was still sitting in the passenger seat, although Windflower thought he could see the boy eating his ice cream cone. Progress, he hoped.

He walked along the beach for a few minutes and then returned to the Jeep. Levi Parsons had eaten his cone and put in his earbuds. Windflower tapped on the window of the Jeep. “We don’t allow them in RCMP vehicles,” he said.

Levi Parsons almost jumped out of his skin and quickly took his earbuds out.
